INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL MEDIA

UNIT DESCRIPTION

This foundational unit introduces students to the historical and technological development of digital media (digitized content that can be transmitted over the internet or computer networks that can include text, audio, video, and graphics). It explains how various digital channels can be used to communicate a message. The unit also explores how digital media can be used strategically to achieve specific business and/or communications outcomes through the development and broadcast of content for targeted audiences using nominated channels. The unit examines employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in the professional digital media landscape and delves into specialised areas such as content writing, content creation, user experience design, digital and social media marketing, coding and analytics and digital entrepreneurship. In addition, students develop personal qualities and skills needed to work within the industry and learn to work collaboratively as part of a team and learn about the briefing process, working to deadlines and the roles and execution of digital media projects.

The delivery of the unit incorporates a range of teaching and learning strategies including: lectures, tutorials, workshops, class discussions, collaborative group activities, student presentations, independent student research and readings.
